A budget that survives real life

Turn tracking into a plan you will actually keep past week three.

Diligent planning is not a lack of faith; it is how you make room to be generous later.

Proverbs 21:5

Two weeks of truth

Before you build a budget, track every dollar for two weeks. Not to shame yourself, just to see. Most people are wrong about their spending by 20–30%, and the leak is rarely one big thing. It is small, repeated things: delivery fees, in-app purchases, a subscription you forgot about since September.

Fixed versus variable

Fixed costs stay the same every month: phone bill, car insurance, a subscription. Variable costs move: food out, gas, clothes, fun. Fixed costs are where you negotiate and cancel; variable costs are where you adjust week to week. Trying to fix everything at once is why most budgets collapse.

Key terms

Fixed expense: A cost that stays roughly the same each month, like a phone bill.

Variable expense: A cost that changes month to month, like food and gas.
