Saving and your emergency fund

Pay yourself first, and stop letting surprises become debt.

The ant stores in summer for what winter will require. Saving is preparation, not hoarding.

Proverbs 6:6–8

Why leftover saving fails

Saving whatever is left at the end of the month means saving nothing, because spending expands to fill whatever is available. Reverse the order: on payday, a set amount moves to savings before you see it. You cannot spend what you never saw, and your brain treats the remaining balance as the real budget.

Start smaller than feels impressive

Twenty-five dollars a week is $1,300 a year. It is not dramatic, but it builds the identity of a person who saves, and that identity is what carries you through the years when the amounts get bigger. Increase it every time your income rises, before lifestyle creep can claim the difference.

Key terms

Automation: Setting transfers or payments to happen on a schedule without your involvement.
