Revolution against the friars

Gomburza, Rizal, and a revolution that spoke in two religious languages at once.

Filipino priests fought for justice and lost their lives for it. Their memory is a witness that faithfulness can cost something.

Amos 5:24

What happened

After a mutiny by workers and soldiers at the Cavite arsenal in January 1872, the campaign for Filipino parish priests was crushed. Fathers Mariano Gómez, José Burgos and Jacinto Zamora — known together as Gomburza — were tried and executed by garrote in February 1872. The evidence was weak; the message was clear. Filipinos who asked for a share of the Church would be treated as rebels.

The seed that grew

Students in Manila watched the executions. Among them was a young José Rizal, who later dedicated El Filibusterismo to the three priests. Gomburza turned a dispute about parishes into a national wound, and taught a generation that the Church question and the freedom question were now the same question.

Key terms

Gomburza: Fathers Gómez, Burgos and Zamora, Filipino priests executed in 1872 after a mutiny they were accused of orchestrating.
